Scooter, car or driver: choosing how to get around Bali

A plain comparison of the three ways most visitors move around the island.

When a scooter makes sense

Scooters suit one or two people with light bags who are staying in one area and are already confident riding in mixed traffic. They're easy to park and slip through congestion in places like Canggu.

They're less comfortable for long journeys, in heavy rain, or with suitcases. If you've never ridden before, Bali's traffic is a demanding place to learn.

When a car makes sense

A car works for families, groups and anyone with luggage. Air-conditioning helps on hot afternoons, and you can carry beach gear or shopping.

Roads in villages and around popular areas can be narrow, and parking near beaches is limited. A compact car is often easier than a large one.

When a private driver makes sense

A driver suits day trips, airport transfers, and anyone who'd rather not navigate. You agree the route and hours beforehand and can rest between stops.
